God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.[c]
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields[d] with fire. 10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
This psalm encourages us to take comfort in God when things look very dark, tough and threatening. Although the world appears to be spinning out of control, God is in control. We only have to be STILL and know that we worship a living GOD. Psalm 46, was the inspiration of Martin Luther’s great hymn, “A mighty fortress is our God.” Anytime he was discouraged he read Psalm 46.
Our main focus from this text is Psalm 46:10 “BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.” There has hardly been another time in the history of the world when stillness was needed more than it is today. The noise of this terrible virus (Corona-virus / Convid – 19) is heard aloud everywhere. 2 Timothy 3:1 “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.” The outbreak of this virus is terrible. This virus is killing thousands and infecting tens of thousands. It’s keeps spreading.
I am still in shock at how much the world has changed over the last few weeks. A few days ago, our President announced all churches to be closed, all schools and all markets. I have been following the news reports and I can say the world is in a mess up now. All church services are cancelled for four weeks. I have never seen anything like this happen before. What an usual time we’re living in.
It is important to note that the Psalm in which the words “BE STILL” appears is filled with NOISE and commotion. We see the earth shakes, the waters roar and are troubled, mountains falling into the heart of the sea, the sound of war is heard throughout the land etc. This looks frightening and panicking. But then a voice is heard out of the noise in verse 10 saying “BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.” These words assures us that God is in control. He will exalt His name among nations. Everything is totally under divine control. His plans are not interrupted. Let us not panic, nor fear. We only have to be still and know that our God is the God of Jacob. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
THE LORD ALMIGHTY IS WITH US
Fear has gone viral in our world today. We shouldn’t let fear rule in our hearts, instead we should let the peace of Christ rule our hearts. The Lord will never leave us nor forsake us. Spend more time with Lord and with family.
